Participación

En 2024 me presenté a las elecciones para el Consejo Pastoral de STJHC. Lamentablemente, no fui elegido ese año. Sin embargo, en 2025 fui llamado para cubrir un puesto vacante por un año. De acuerdo con los Estatutos, fui llamado porque obtuve el segundo mayor número de votos en las elecciones de 2024. Ha sido un honor servir en el Consejo Pastoral este último año, y me he esforzado representar a la parroquia como Enlace de el Comité Permanente de Evangelización. Esta experiencia me ha preparado para buscar la reelección por un termino completo de tres años comenzando en 2026 y humildemente les pido su consideración. Como cristiano toda mi vida, pero convertido al catolicismo relativamente reciente (2021), mi principal objetivo ha sido aprender lo más posible sobre las enseñanzas de la Iglesia Católica. Mi esposa Dolores y yo hemos participado regularmente en las clases de Formación en la Fe para Adultos desde que nos unimos a la parroquia de St. Joseph-Honey Creek en 2021, y hemos obtenido muchos buenos amigos al llegar a amar nuestra parroquia. Además, he participado en el programa A.C.T.S. y formé parte del Team durante dos años como Acompañante Espiritual. Durante el último año, también hemos servido como Stephen Ministers.

Razón para Servir

Mi deseo es utilizar mis talentos para servir en cualquier función que pueda ser beneficiosa. Si es la voluntad de Dios, continuar sirviendo en el Consejo Pastoral podría ser el siguiente paso en la dirección correcta. Tengo experiencia administrativa: manejando contratos y asuntos delicados de personal; preparando, interpretando e implementando reglas; resolución de quejas y controversias que inevitablemente surgen en cualquier organización, escuchando a todas las partes con imparcialidad y llegando a una conclusión razonable basada en las reglas y procedimientos adecuados; dirigiéndome a grupos, respondiendo a preguntas y haciendo recomendaciones razonadas a la autoridad superior. Me parece que esta experiencia podría ser útil para la labor del Consejo Pastoral.

Habilidades y Cualidades

Actualmente estoy semi-jubilado y tengo el tiempo y el deseo continuar sirviendo a nuestra parroquia y ayudando al Consejo Pastoral a expresar sus opiniones a nuestro Pastor como representantes de la comunidad parroquial. Soy bilingüe. Mi experiencia laboral incluye diez años en administración profesional en educación superior y cuarenta años como abogado, incluyendo leyes de la educación pública representando a distritos escolares y leyes de la educación superior representando al Sistema Universitario Texas A&M. Como abogado especializado en las leyes de educación en sitios académicos donde las decisiones administrativas difíciles se cuestionan con frecuencia, me esforcé por practicar la ley en una manera preventiva, brindando análisis y orientación legal a administradores, incluyendo presidentes, vicepresidentes y jefes de departamento, abordando los requisitos legales y normativos; además de ofrecer recomendaciones razonadas y orientación a través del debido proceso requerido para garantizar el cumplimiento y la equidad. Metas

Mantengo una mente abierta respecto a los objetivos que se deben alcanzar y me esforzaré por apoyar las metas actuales del Consejo Pastoral y la visión de nuestro Pastor, además de escuchar las sugerencias de los feligreses. Me preocupa que un número tan elevado de católicos no dediquen más tiempo a aprender sobre la fe estudiando el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, que en mi opinión es un tratado excepcional y un recurso invaluable. También me gustaría ver una mayor asistencia a misa diaria y quizás añadir una misa al mediodía ayudaría.

Biografía

Jorge D. Canales, abogado y asesor legal, cuenta con cuarenta años de experiencia y está licenciado en el estado de Texas. Su práctica legal en Spring Branch, Texas, se centra principalmente en testamentos, fideicomisos y directivas médicas anticipadas. Es miembro de la Sección de Derecho Inmobiliario, Sucesorio y Fiduciario del Colegio de Abogados de Texas. El Sr. Canales se jubiló de la Oficina del Asesor Jurídico General del Sistema Universitario Texas A&M, donde se desempeñó como Asesor Jurídico Principal para Litigios y Resolución de Controversias. Anteriormente, fue Fiscal General Adjunto del Estado de Texas y ejerció la abogacía de forma privada. Su experiencia previa incluye diez años como administrador en la Universidad de Houston y la Universidad Panamericana. Posee una Licenciatura en Artes y Administración de Empresas de la Universidad Panamericana y un Doctorado en Jurisprudencia del Centro de Leyes de la Universidad de Houston. Canales asisten a misa diariamente siempre que les es posible y rezan el Rosario juntos todos los días.

Involvement

In 2024 I ran for election to the STJHC Pastoral Council. Unfortunately, I was not selected that year. However in 2025 I was called to fill a position for one year that had become vacant. Pursuant to the By-Laws, I was called because I had received the next highest number of votes in the 2024 election.

It has been an honor to serve on the Pastoral Council this past year, and I have endeavored to represent the parish as the Liaison to the Evangelization Standing Committee. This experience has prepared me to seek re-election to a full three year term starting in 2026, and I humbly ask for your consideration.

As a life-long Christian, but relatively new Catholic convert (2021), my primary focus has been to learn as much as possible about the teachings of the Catholic Church.

My wife Dolores and I have regularly participated in Adult Faith Formation classes since we became members of St. Joseph-Honey Creek in 2021 and we have made many good friends as we have grown to love this parish.

In addition, I have participated in A.C.T.S. and served on Team for two years as a Spiritual Companion. During this last year, we have also served as Stephen Ministers.

Reason for Serving

My desire is to use any talents I may have to serve in any capacity that may be of benefit. If it's God's will, continuing to serve on the Pastoral Council may be the next step in the right direction.

I have administrative experience: dealing with contracts and sensitive personnel matters; drafting, interpretation and implementation of policies; addressing grievances and controversies that inevitably arise in any organization while listening to all sides fairly and bringing issues to a reasonable conclusion based on proper policy and procedure; addressing groups, answering questions and making reasoned recommendations to higher authority.

It seems to me that this experience could be useful to the efforts of the Pastoral Council.

Skills and Traits

I am currently semi-retired and have the time and desire to continue to serve our parish by helping the Pastoral Council offer their voice to our Pastor as representatives of the greater parish community. I am bilingual.

My work experience includes ten years of professional administrative experience higher education, and forty years as a licensed practicing attorney, including public education law representing school districts and higher education law experience representing the Texas A&M University System.

As an education law attorney in academic environments where difficult administrative decisions are routinely challenged, I endeavored to practice "preventative law" by providing legal analysis and guidance to administrators, including presidents, vice-presidents, and department heads addressing legal and policy requirements; but also offering reasoned recommendations and guidance through the required due process to ensure compliance and fairness.

Currently, I am in part-time private practice primarily preparing Texas Wills and related Estate Planning documents for my clients.

Goals

I continue to have an open mind as to what goals should be accomplished and will endeavor to support current Pastoral Council goals and our Pastor's vision, as well as, listen to parishioners' suggestions.

I am personally concerned that such a high number of Catholics do not spend more time learning about the faith by studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which in my view is an outstanding treatise and invaluable resource.

I would also like to see more daily Mass attendance and perhaps adding a Noon Mass would help.

Biography

Jorge D. Canales, Attorney and Counselor at Law, has forty years of legal experience licensed in the State of Texas. Mr. Canales' law practice in Spring Branch, Texas is primarily focused on Texas Wills, Trusts and Advance Medical Directives. He is a member of the Real Estate, Probate & Trust Law Section of the State Bar of Texas.

Mr. Canales retired from the Texas A&M University System Office of General Counsel as Managing Counsel for Litigation and Dispute Resolution. Before that he served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas and was in private practice. Mr. Canales' prior experience includes ten years as an administrator with the University of Houston and Pan American University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art and Business from Pan American University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Houston Law Center. Mr. Canales is fluent in Spanish.

On the personal side, Mr. Canales is a native Texan raised in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. He and his wife Dolores have been married for fifty-two years and together they have two married daughters and six grandchildren ranging in age from twenty to eleven. In addition to being an attorney, Mr. Canales studied art at the university level and loves to draw and paint, mostly landscapes in watercolor. Mr. Canales enjoys reading, Chess and playing the guitar, as well as, organic vegetable gardening. Mr. Canales follows the Daily Roman Missal and the Liturgy of the Hours. He and Mrs. Canales attend Daily Mass when possible and pray the Rosary together every day.
